Child and Family Services Law Team

Purpose

This section highlights Swan River First Nation’s active movement toward self-determination in child welfare through the development of our own Child and Family Services Law.

Introduction

The Swan River First Nation Child and Family Services Law Development Team is committed to asserting our Treaty and inherent rights to care for our children, in accordance with our traditional laws, teachings, and values. Our goal is to create a legal framework that reflects who we are and protects our families for generations to come.

Project Goals

  • Exercise jurisdiction under our Treaty and inherent right to govern child and family services.
  • Affirm and integrate traditional laws and community values.
  • Build a CFS law that prioritizes family unity, prevention, and cultural continuity.

Community Engagement

We are committed to ensuring this law is shaped by the voices of our people. Engagement activities include:

  • Surveys and interviews with community members
  • Elder consultations
  • Youth circles and engagement sessions
  • Focus groups and community forums

Drafting Process & Timeline 

  • Phase 1: Community engagement & data collection (Complete)
  • Phase 2: Law drafting & internal review (Current phase)
  • Phase 3: Community feedback on draft (Fall 2025)
  • Phase 4: Final approval & implementation (Winter 2026)
